Ken Hunt, 1970-2005

Kenneth B. Hunt (AKA Sketch), 34, journalist, poet, musician, performer, pagan, anarchist, ESL tutor and native of Aberdeen, WA, died suddenly of injuries in Chicago on March 21, 2005. He was among his friends admired as the very model of the artist engagé –from the very beginning Sketch was a staunch supporter of ideas and people that question social norms and conventions.

He was a founder of Pe.A.Ch. (the Perfomance Art Church) in Austin, TX. He was a member of the Albuquerque Slam Team, a regular performer at Homolatte, a featured performer at the Feast of Fools, and an Associate Publisher at Blithe House Quarterly: Queer Fiction Lives Here (blithe.com). He self-published four books and several zines, including "This Carass is a Road Map", "Aerodrome", and "Perpetually Bad Timing". Sketch was also a journalist for the Austin Chronicle, Independent Media Center, the Seattle Times, and the New York Times, and many community and weekly papers. In Boston he was a reporter and producer for the Allston-Brighton Edition, a progressive public affairs news program. As a musician, he was a founding member of the Seattle bands "Harvey Wallbanger" and "Self-Help Seminar" and more currently was in the Chicago bands "Unplanned Pregnancy", "Mayor Daley", and his artistic project "This Is Bullshit". Sketch was a fierce anarchist pacifist and core member of the Chicagoland Anarchist Network, Mad Tea Party, Queer and Trans Caucus, & Food Not Bombs.

Ken Hunt earned his BA in English and Journalism from Univ. of Washington/Seattle, his Masters in English from Univ. of Texas/Austin, and worked towards a PhD in Journalism at Univ. of Wisconsin/Madison. He was currently enrolled in a Masters of Education/ESL program. Sketch taught ESL at the Howard Area Community Center in Chicago.

He was the beloved son of Dr. Kenneth (Psyche) Hunt of Aberdeen and the late Carole Hunt. Cherished brother of Susan Hunt of Bellingham, WA. Dearest nephew of John Hunt of Longmont, CO; Julie (Ross McGregor) White of Toronto and Janet Anderson of Edgewood, MD. Great-nephew of Ethel Eshinsky. Cousin of Megan Hunt of Vancouver and Erin Hunt of Longmont, CO. Sketch leaves behind many friends and comrades in Chicago, Aberdeen, Austin, Albuquerque, New York, and Boston.

A celebration of his life will be April 3, 12:00 PM, for location contact VivaSketch1@yahoo.com. Also on April 2 in Aberdeen, and at various times in San Francisco, New York, and Austin. There will also be a second memorial and picnic in Chicago, April 9, 12:00-4:00 PM at Waldheim Cementary, near the Haymarket Memorial in honor of Sketch's anarchist beliefs, 863 S. Des Plaines Ave, Forest Park, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Carole Hunt/Aberdeen Rotary Foundation Health and Welfare Fund, P.O. Box 86, Aberdeen, WA.
